Along with the Croatian National Theatre's Drama, Gavella Drama Theatre is the only playhouse in Zagreb which, even in its name, is clearly oriented towards dramatic theatre. In its programme, Gavella Theatre equally represents the domestic theatrical legacy, as well as dramatic classics of the world; Croatian drama today and contemporary international drama, cherishing genre diversity and different views on theatre at the same time.
We believe that, on foundations such as these, it is possible to imagine and create a repertoire which poses questions for society – as well as for the theatre itself – by questioning ethical and aesthetic values. Our aim is to create a programme which is on the one hand interesting and appealing to the audience and, on the other hand, meets the high artistic standards which were set six decades ago by the founder of Gavella Theatre, dr. Branko Gavella, a director, theorist and pedagogist, and the key figure in the development of modern Croatian acting.
Located at the same address in Frankopanska street, since 1953, Gavella Theatre has premiered around 400 plays, some of whom have been a part of the repertoire for over ten yeas. During its long existence the playhouse managed to become recognized even outside our country's borders. Guest performances on other theatres' stages are a regular practice and the quality of Gavella Theatre's productions has won recognition at some of the most significant theatre festivals in the region, Europe, and even overseas. The regular ensemble, with its 38 actors and actresses, has been strengthened by new names in the past few years, thus, the younger generation makes up a large part of our ensemble.
