Axel Preuß was born in Hamburg. He studied Philosophy, Modern German Literature and History of Art in Hamburg und Berlin. During his studies he worked for independent theatre collectives and as an assistant director with Thomas Ostermeier at the Baracke of the Deutsches Theater Berlin. This was followed by guest engagements as a dramaturge in Berlin, Lübeck and Rostock at the Volkstheater from 1999 to 2002. Axel Preuß was head dramaturge and deputy director at Landestheater Tübingen (LTT) from 2002 to 2005, artistic director as well as deputy director at the Theater Heidelberg from 2005 to 2009. In addition, he was the artistic director of the »Heidelberger Stückemarkt« from 2005 to 2009. Since 2010 Axel Preuß has been engaged as head dramaturge and deputy director of artistic matters at Staatstheater Braunschweig. Here, he is also the director of the »Themenwoche Interkultur« – Festival for diversity and cultural participation which he initiated in 2012. Furthermore, he is in charge of the cooperation program »Fliehkräfte« - sponsored by »Doppelpass« - Funds of the Federal Cultural Foundation for Cooperation in Theatre.
